Jazz, world music and composition

David Rekkab, born in 1977, is a pianist, composer and arranger. His eclectic background weaves together jazz, improvised music and influences from around the world. Trained at the JAM in Montpellier and then at the Université Paul-Valéry, he went on to study at the CNR de Montpellier in composition and electroacoustics, where he took part in founding the jazz programme alongside François Théberge and Pierre de Bethmann.

In 2002, he joined the CNSM de Lyon in the musical writing classes of Loïc Mallié and Gérard Geay, graduating in 2006. Winner of the Rencontres Internationales de Composition de Cergy-Pontoise in 2005, he took first prize with his piece Lune Bleue, Lune de Miel.

From bigband to FANGA, from stage to teaching

A passionate educator, he teaches piano, harmony and composition, leads workshops (including the celebrated Musiques Festives) and regularly gives lectures on music history and compositional techniques.

A recognised improviser, David performs in jazz contexts (from combo to bigband) and in African, Mediterranean and Latin music projects. He is one of the founding members of FANGA, a Montpellier afrobeat group, in which he long played vintage keyboards and composed a significant part of the repertoire.
